What if a guy did ask and get a million dollars? In Louis Carlet’s adaptation of an ancient Chinese fable to a 20th century New York setting, Scooter’s three gifts mean more than money. As the millennium winds down, they prepare him for the ordeals to come. However, can he pass the ultimate test when the inconceivable occurs? With the tension at a boiling point, Scooter must find a way out through a violent ocean, torture, 9-11 and a nuclear holocaust. This story is not only about the pursuit of wealth and love, but a quest for enlightenment. Edgy with plenty of twists and turns, this book will not disappoint.

This book is written by a friend of mine, but that's not why I'm giving 5 stars. I'm giving it 5 stars because I am bowled over by how amazing it is. Louie grew up in the States, where he rode to high school on a unicycle, tested out of the smarty-pants classes and spent his school days on the smoking court, juggling and performing magic tricks. He now lives in Japan where literary agents and major publishers are scarce - that is the only reason this book is not on the NYT bestseller list. The storytelling voice is so uniquely quirky, not a page went by where I didn't burst out laughing or marvel at a genius turn of phrase or weird and wonderful insight. Not only that, but this novel is tautly-plotted, thought-provoking, and peopled with complex and beautifully drawn characters. Check it.Product details

Manna and the Millennium edition by Louis Carlet Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Amazing book really enjoyed it. I love the twist the book takes. You should defiantly pick it up.
This book starts off as a great mystery with a strong hook. Then it gets political, and I could see ideas I was familiar with (and agree with) slipping in. After that, it gets psychedelic and goes off the wall. Then, it settles down into an extremely well-written and genuinely touching character study that perplexes the reader with its connection to the first half of the book. But there are enough little hints of a connection - in the form of references to the old woman - to lead the reader to have faith that it'll all tie together in the end. And indeed it does. Brilliant stuff.
I don't generally review books but after finishing Manna and the Millennium, I felt compelled. First of all - WOW! From page 1 as Scooter climbed the stairs to his girlfriend's apartment, I was hooked. While trying not to give too much away, the author writes in such a way that you actually feel you are right riding the highs and lows along with the main character. You get angry with Scooter when he wastes his money and then cheer for him as he grows from selfish, and self-centered into a caring and compassionate man. You will find yourself holding your breath as Scooter begins his ultimate struggle and test and will be totally shocked at the ending when you reach the last page. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the author's next book.
